Team Peoria's seven-year winning streak in the River Cup Senior competition is on the line5/31/2025

Will history repeat itself this weekend in the River Cup Senior competition at Lick Creek Golf Course in Pekin? Team Peoria golfers sure hope so. Back in 2020, the last time Lick Creek hosted the River Cup, Team Peoria fell behind Team Tazwood 5-1 after the first day best ball matches. The singles matches on the second day were a different story. Team Peoria won eight of the 12 matches, halved another, and rallied to beat Team Tazewell 9.5 to 8.5. That come-from-behind victory is part of a run of seven wins in a row and 11 victories in 13 years for Team Peoria that has given the golfers from west of the Illinois River an 18-7 advantage in the annual series, now in its 26th year. Team Tazwood has won only twice since 2012, in 2012 and 2017. This could be the year the tide turns in Team Tazwood's favor, predicts long-time Team Peoria captain Tim Walters. Then again, maybe not. "This could be the most competitive River Cup Senior match in a decade, or we could get slaughtered. I'm preaching to our guys that we're the underdog," said Walters, who is playing in the River Cup for the 14th year and is in his 12th year as the Team Peoria captain. "They (Team Tazwood) have five or six new good young golfers, and we're getting older," Walters said. "But if we play well, we can keep it close." In addition to the new players on the Team Tazwood roster, a familiar face has returned. After playing in the River Cup Men's competition last year, Tim Saurs has returned to the Senior (age 50 and older) division. "Tim is amazing," Walters said. "At age 68, he's a scratch golfer." Team Peoria's lengthy hot streak has been fueled by a solid core of nine or 10 golfers, Walters said, while Team Tazwood has had more turnover amongst its roster. Eric Dicks is the Team Tazwood captain. Here's the schedule of this weekend's River Cup Senior competition matches: SATURDAY'S MATCHES BEST BALL (Team Peoria golfers listed first) -- Rick Lehew/Rod Jackson vs. Tom Oshinski/Ed Whitaker, 8:30 a.m. -- Tom Hammerton/Tim Walters vs. Tim Saurs/Eric Dicks, 8:40 a.m. -- Mark Greskoviak/Jeff Ott vs. Barry Neal/Ken Gibson, 8:50 a.m. -- Tim Krause/Bob Chung vs. Derek Anderson/Jim Olt, 9 a.m. -- Dan Moran/Adam Angst vs. Scott Hooste/Chris Fort, 9:10 a.m. -- Bo Cleveland/Jeff White vs. Scott Belsly/Chris Frasco, 9:20 a.m. SUNDAY'S MATCHES SINGLES -- Rick Lehew vs. Barry Neal, 7:30 a.m. -- Rod Jackson vs. Ken Gibson, 7:30 a.m. -- Bob Chung vs. Tim Saurs, 7:40 a.m. -- Tim Krause vs. Eric Dicks, 7:40 a.m. -- Tom Hammerton vs. Tom Oshinski, 7:50 a.m. -- Tim Walters vs. Ed Whitaker, 7:50 a.m. -- Bo Cleveland vs. Scott Hooste, 8 a.m. -- Jeff White vs. Chris Fort, 8 a.m. -- Dan Moran vs. Derek Anderson, 8:10 a.m. -- Adam Angst vs. Jim Olt, 8:10 a.m. -- Mark Greskoviak vs. Scott Belsly, 8:20 a.m. -- Jeff Ott vs. Chris Frasco, 8:20 a.m. By Steve Stein
In addition to sharing the same first name, the two captains in this year's River Cup Men's competition are taking the same approach to the annual battle between the best golfers on each side of the Illinois River in central Illinois. "We're definitely the underdog," said Team Peoria captain Ryan Julius. "We're going to have to go out and make some birdies to keep up." "Our mentality is the same. We're the underdog," Team Tazwood captain Ryan Saurs said in reaction to Julius' declaration. "We're missing one of our best guys (Bradley University golfer Carter Stevenson, who recently underwent hip surgery) and a couple other top guys couldn't play this year," Saurs said. Lick Creek Golf Course in Pekin, a challenging 6,964-yard, par-72 layout, is the site this weekend of the 33rd annual River Cup Men's competition and the 26th annual Senior competition. Does that give the Team Tazwood Men's team the home course advantage as it pursues its sixth win over Team Peoria in eight years and looks to increase its 20-12 series advantage after last year's 10 1/2 to 7 1-2 win at Mt. Hawley Country Club in Peoria? Maybe. "I've told our guys we know Lick Creek is a tough course. Don't complain about it. Embrace the challenge," Julius said. "We've practiced there. I think we're as prepared as we can be to take on Team Tazwood at their home course." Saurs doesn't think playing at Lick Creek will make a difference for his team. "It doesn't matter which side of the river we play on in the River Cup. Everyone on both teams knows the courses," he said. "That certainly includes Lick Creek." Julius, a first-time team captain, is confident his team will do well this weekend even though, in his eyes, Team Peoria is the underdog. "We have a tight-knit, talented team with great camaraderie," he said. "And I'm very happy with how the pairings shook out." Those pairings include two matches involving the two captains. They'll play in the final best ball match of the day Saturday (Brien Davis is Julius' partner and Jon Hauter is Saurs' partner) and in one of the leadoff singles matches Sunday. "I wanted to be one of the first ones done Sunday so I can watch our guys play the rest of the day," said Saurs, who will be competing in his 22nd River Cup and is a team captain for the second time. Despite the loss of Stevenson and others, Team Tazwood still has a talented team that includes a recently crowned collegiate national champion. River Cup veteran Curt Minkel and his son Mason Minkel, a former Pekin Community High School golf star who was a member of the NCAA Division II champion University of West Florida men's golf team this spring, will team up for a best ball match Saturday against Team Peoria's Scott Phegley and Steven Taylor. Father and son will play key singles matches Sunday vs. Britt Bothast and Taylor, respectively. "It's a blessing to play again with my dad in a River Cup best ball match. The River Cup is very important to us," said Mason Minkel, who has transferred to NCAA Division I Virginia Commonwealth University for his final collegiate golf season. Lick Creek is a Pekin Park District course. Cory Proehl is the director of golf for the Park District. He said Lick Creek is in its best shape ever. That's saying something, because the course opened in 1976 and has been heralded for years as one of the top courses in Illinois. The last time Lick Creek hosted the River Cup was in 2020, just after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. That year, in addition to the Men's and Senior competitions, the River Cup Junior competition was held on the same weekend instead of at a different time. "We hosted the River Cup in 2020, but it didn't feel like we did," Proehl said. That's because multiple special rules were in place, dictated by the state of Illinois, United States Golf Association and Chicago District Golf Association, to keep players healthy. Everyone had to be at least six feet apart at all times, or wear a mask. Frequent hand washing and use of hand sanitizer were encouraged. There were no rakes in the bunkers. Flagsticks couldn't be touched. Caddies were not allowed. If a player had a temperature, was ill, or was exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19 within 14 days before the start of the River Cup, that player would have had to withdraw. To ensure the rules were followed, each player needed to sign a waiver. "We were in unchartered territory back then," Proehl said. "My biggest job that year was to protect everyone from getting sick, including myself." Excluding 2020, the last time Lick Creek hosted the River Cup was in 2000. "With no disrespect to the golfers who played here in 2020, we truly feel like this is the first time we're hosting the River Cup in 25 years," Proehl said. Here's the schedule of this weekend's River Cup Men's competition matches: SATURDAY'S MATCHES BEST BALL (Team Peoria golfers listed first) -- Britt Bothast/Ryan Brown vs. Jason Woll/Brian Draher, 7:30 a.m. -- Jeremy Ott/Andrew Wuethrich vs. Zach Heinold/Connor Watson, 7:40 a.m. -- John Ehrgott/Jordan Fahel vs. Tim Sheppard/Austin Craig, 7:50 a.m. -- Doug Middendorf/Scot Frankenreider vs. Jason Boeker/Ryan Cusack, 8 a.m. -- Scott Phegley/Steven Taylor vs. Curt Minkel/Mason Minkel, 8:10 a.m. -- Brien Davis/Ryan Julius vs. Ryan Saurs/Jon Hauter, 8:20 a.m. SUNDAY'S MATCHES SINGLES -- Ryan Julius vs. Ryan Saurs, 8:30 a.m. -- Brien Davis vs. Jon Hauter, 8:30 a.m. -- Doug Middendorf vs. Connor Watson, 8:40 a.m. -- Steven Taylor vs. Mason Minkel, 8:40 a.m. -- Andrew Wuethrich vs. Ryan Cusack, 8:50 a.m. -- Jeremy Ott vs. Jason Boeker, 8:50 a.m. -- Ryan Brown vs. Zach Heinold, 9 a.m. -- Britt Bothast vs. Curt Minkel, 9 a.m. -- Scot Frankenreider vs. Jason Woll, 9:10 a.m. -- Scott Phegley vs. Brian Draher, 9:10 a.m. -- Jordan Fahel vs. Tim Sheppard, 9:20 a.m. -- John Ehrgott vs. Austin Craig, 9:20 a.m. Team Peoria is as hot as the weather as it beats Team Tazwood in the 25th annual Junior River Cup8/7/2024
By Steve Stein Team Peoria defeated Team Tazwood 11-7 last weekend in the 25th annual Junior River Cup golf competition, cutting Team Tazwood's lead in the series to 17-8. But everyone left Mt. Hawley Country Club in Peoria a winner late Sunday afternoon after Team Peoria was presented the championship trophy. The team captains. The golfers. The spectators. The caddies. The tournament officials. All winners. All agreed Mt. Hawley was a wonderful host and the course was presented beautifully. Each endured hot, muggy weather Saturday and Sunday to play or witness two great days of golf that featured several close matches, clutch shots, and exemplary sportsmanship. "I played in the Junior River Cup when I was a kid. It was great to see another generation of golfers do that and compete so hard. There was a high level of talent out there," said Team Peoria captain Patrick Hogan, who filled in for longtime captain Daniel Young, who was out of town. "I'm especially proud of the kids on my team who found a way to win while not playing their best golf," Hogan said. "And several of our guys did a great job finishing. A lot of matches came down to the final holes." One of the close matches was the last one Sunday. Team Peoria's Brock Brown made a long birdie putt on the 17th hole to tie his individual match against Team Tazwood's Connor Watson. Both golfers then birdied the 18th hole. Team Tazwood captain Gregg Guenther said the golfers on both teams "all won by qualifying to compete in this tournament. I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone will do this fall on their school's team." Guenther said his Team Tazwood golfers played as well as they could, but Team Peoria was just too good. Guenther also said he was delighted to see so many former Junior River Cup golfers return to the tournament to work as caddies this year. "More than usual," he said. "That says something about how much they enjoyed playing in the tournament." River Cup Foundation President Matt Fahel said he was humbled by the number of parents, grandparents, other family members and spectators who came out to watch the matches on such hot days. "It makes what we do worthwhile," Team Peoria and Team Tazwood each had 12 golfers on its roster, four in the under-15 age group and eight in the 16-18 age group. Each golfer had a story to tell. Here are Luke Johnson and Cooper Hansen's stories. Johnson won his best ball match Saturday and individual match Sunday to help Team Peoria win the championship. The Dunlap High School junior golfer lost both of his Junior River Cup matches last year. He said he used the match play experience he gained playing in the 2023 Junior River Cup and the two defeats as motivation this year. Sage advice from Hogan and Johnson's family members was another weapon in Johnson's arsenal. They all told him to have a short memory during his matches. Johnson put the advice to good use in his individual match Sunday vs. Team Tazwood's Owen Adams. "I was 2-down after two holes," he said. "But I said to myself, 'That's done,' and moved on." Johnson ended up winning the match 4 and 2. Hansen played golf for three years at Delavan High School, helping the Panthers win three consecutive Tomahawk Conference championships. He'll be playing his fall for the men's golf team at Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg. Hansen didn't win either of his Junior River Cup matches (one draw and one loss) and Team Tazwood didn't win the championship, but those were the only downers of the weekend for him. "Delavan's golf team doesn't play the big schools in the area like the schools in the Mid-Illini Conference. I showed (in the Junior River Cup) that I can compete with the big dogs," Hansen said. "Plus, this tournament was great preparation for college golf." Hansen was in the last group Saturday, which meant the entire gallery and many of the golfers surrounded the 18th hole green to watch the conclusion of his best ball match. "I felt a little pressure. But that was good," Hansen said. His 15-foot putt for par on the 17th hole put his best ball team 1-up and secured at least a tie for the match. The match ended up in a draw. Here are the results of the matches in the 25th annual Junior River Cup: SATURDAY AUGUST 3RD RESULTS BEST BALL MATCHES AGES 15-UNDER -- Jacob Shelby-Shane Cunningham (P) draw with Will Brown-Paxten Heinold. -- Colin Kemp-Court Bohanan (T) def. The best young golfers in central Illinois will tee it up this weekend at Mt. Hawley Country Club in Peoria. What's the occasion? The 25th annual Junior River Cup competition. Team Tazwood will take on Team Peoria in two-golfer best ball matches Saturday and individual matches Sunday. There are a dozen golfers on each team, eight in the 16-18 age group and four in the under-15 age group. Playing on its "home" course, Team Peoria will look this weekend to end Team Tazwood's two-year winning streak and cut into Team Tazwood's 17-7 record in the overall series. While the Junior River Cup championship and bragging rights for a year will be up for grabs this weekend, there's no doubt a large number of golfers who played on both teams in the Junior River Cup over the past 24 years went on to have outstanding high school and collegiate careers, and even turn pro. Among them are Drake Bushong, Jordan Fahel, Mason Ghidina, Jonathan Hauter, Jonathan Krick, Pete and Tommy Kuhl, Mason Minkel, David Perkins, Scott Phegley, Carter Stevenson, Weston Walker and Jason Woll. Minkel, now a senior on the NCAA Division II power University of West Florida men's golf team after a stellar golf career at Pekin Community High School, went 9-0-1 in five Junior River Cup competitions, helping Team Tazwood win four times. Winning nine out of his 10 Junior River Cup matches was great, Minkel said, and so was the experience. "It was one of the first times I played in front of news cameras and crowds," Minkel said. Who will emerge from this year's Junior River Cup rosters to join the list of Junior River Cup alumni greats? That's to be determined. Gregg Guenther is in his sixth year as the Team Tazwood captain. He has a 3-2 record. Guenther has been the coach of the Midwest Central High School golf team since 1997, the year he founded the program at the Manito school. Patrick Hogan is filling in for his friend Daniel Young this weekend as the Team Peoria captain. Young, who has been the Team Peoria captain for nine years, is out of town. Hogan is heading into his 10th season as the coach of the Peoria Richwoods High School boys golf team. "I know how much the Junior River Cup means to Danny, so I told him I'd take care of everything while he was gone," Hogan said. Each captain has a past connection to the Junior River Cup. Guenther was a caddy when he was younger. Hogan played for Team Peoria in the 2003 Junior River Cup at Pine Lakes Golf Course in Washington. He won his best ball match with teammate Trevor Fitch, and halved his individual match against Alex Harrington, helping Team Peoria win 7-5. "If I remember correctly, I won the 18th hole with a birdie from the bunker to halve the match against Alex," Hogan said. "I really enjoyed playing the best ball part of the Junior River Cup. Golf is normally an individual sport, but best ball is like a team sport in that you have to rely on your partner." Most of the golfers who will play at Mt. Hawley this weekend are new or relatively new to match play. What advice will their captain have for them? "You must have a short memory," Hogan said. "If you have a bad hole, that doesn't mean you're out of a match. Just move on to the next hole and keep grinding. Getting an up and down on a hole can be a backbreaker for your opponent. "Have fun. Enjoy yourself. You'll be creating memories that will last a lifetime. And don't be nervous. The hard part is over. You've played enough good golf over the last several months to qualify to be selected for the team." Guenther reiterated Hogan's words of wisdom about having a short memory during a match. "If a match goes the distance," he said, "it's like you're playing 18 separate matches." There are two aspects of being involved in the Junior River Cup that put an extra smile on Guenther's face. "I love calling kids and telling them they made our team," he said. "And most of the golfers on both teams aren't country club kids, but they get an opportunity play great country club courses like Mt. Hawley, Pekin and Peoria." Pairings for this week's Junior River Cup best ball and individual matches will be determined Friday by Guenther and Hogan, who will alternate making the first choice in a match. Typically, the golfers on both teams play a significant role in setting up the matchups. That's been the case again this year. "I've already had texts from three kids asking to have a certain partner in best ball or telling me who from Team Peoria they'd like to face," Guenther said during a mid-week interview. Here are the 2024 Team Tazwood and Team Peoria rosters and the high school each player will attend, is attending, or attended. For those golfers who won't be in high school this fall, their junior high school or middle school is listed. TEAM TAZWOOD AGES 16-18 -- Owen Adams (Morton) -- Jacob Anderson (Morton) -- Cooper Hansen (Delavan) -- Jack Leman (Roanoke-Benson) -- Luke Martin (Eureka) -- Gavin Schreurs (Washington) -- Nick Unes (East Peoria) -- Connor Watson (East Peoria) AGES 15-UNDER -- Court Bohanan (Washington) -- Will Brown (Pekin Broadmoor Junior High School) -- Paxten Heinold (Washington Middle School) -- Colin Kemp (Pekin) TEAM PEORIA AGES 16-18 -- Brock Brown (Peoria Richwoods) -- Jack Coulter (Peoria Notre Dame) -- Chris Drake (Illini Bluffs) -- Nolan Eccles (Dunlap) -- Drew Gama (Peoria Christian) -- Luke Johnson (Midwest Central) -- Bennett Toews (Homeschool) -- Tanner Wake (Elmwood) AGES 15-UNDER -- Shane Cunningham (Peoria Reservoir Gifted Academy) -- Crew Fortin (Illini Bluffs) -- Nick Herget (Dunlap) -- Jacob Shelby (Dunlap Valley Middle School) By Steve Stein To the victors go the spoils. Or in the case of the River Cup men's competition, a crystal trophy in the shape of cup. "I have the cup at home. It'll be there for about a month," said Austin Craig, captain of Team Tazwood, which defeated Team Peoria 10 1/2 to 7 1/2 last weekend at Mt. Hawley Country Club in Peoria. The win gave Team Tazwood a 20-12 lead over Team Peoria in the overall River Cup standings, and five victories in the last seven years. This was Craig's fifth year playing for Team Tazwood in the River Cup. It was the first time he served as the team's captain. "Being the captain is a whole different scenario than 'just' being on the team. I was constantly looking at the results app, checking out the scores," he said. "We didn't play our best Saturday, but I was confident we could pull out the win Sunday. It's very rare that the guys on our team don't play well two days in a row. I also liked the matchups Sunday. It was just a matter of us executing." Team Tazwood and Team Peoria were tied 3-3 after the best ball competition Saturday. So the championship came down to the 12 individual matches Sunday. One match finished in a draw. Team Tazwood went 7-4 in the other 11 individual matches. Carter Stevenson, DJ Norman, Tim Saurs, Ryan Cusack, Brian Draher, Tim Sheppard and Mason Minkel recorded the victories. At age 67, Saurs should have been playing in the River Cup seniors competition, for players ages 50 and older. After a couple years playing with the seniors, Saurs opted to play in the men's division so he could play with his son Ryan Saurs and he came through with a big win Sunday, defeating Illinois Central College golfer Quinn Cox 4 and 3. Ryan Saurs had the lone draw Sunday, tying with John Team Peoria's Ehrgott. Tim Saurs received a rousing ovation Sunday from the crowd of golfers and spectators that gathered for the awards ceremony as Team Tazwood posed for a team photo. He responded with a huge smile. Andrew Wuethrich, Brien Davis, Doug Middendorf and Steven Taylor won Sunday for Team Peoria. Wuethrich defeated Craig 7 and 6. "I have to hand to Andrew. He kicked my butt," Craig said. Team Peoria captain Britt Bothast, another first-year captain, also lost Sunday. He was defeated by Bradley University golfer Carter Stevenson in a close 1-up match. Craig praised Team Peoria, acknowledging the tough competition it provided, and said, "We know they're going to be hunting us down until next summer." River Cup Foundation President Matt Fahel thanked the family members and friends of the River Cup competitors for filling the golf course during the weekend and cheering on "the best golfers in the area." He also thanked Mt. Hawley club professional Dave Lundy, assistant professional Rico Scott, club superintendent Spencer Smith and the Mt. Hawley membership for their hard work preparing the course and gracious hospitality and allowing the River Cup to "add to the history of Mt. Hawley." Lundy, in turn, said Mt. Hawley was thrilled to host the River Cup, and he thanked the club's board and members for their support of the tournament. "I'm glad the area's best golfers had an opportunity to play our course," he said. Craig said the River Cup men's and senior competitors aren't just the area's best golfers. "Peoria, Tazewell and Woodford counties have as many good golfers as any three counties in Illinois," he said. Here are the results of the 2024 River Cup men's competition: SATURDAY BEST BALL (Par 71) -- Scott Phegley/Jake Schneider (Peoria) drew with Carter Stevenson/DJ Norman (65-65). -- Brian Draher/Jason Woll (Tazwood) def.
